An Afternoon at Nomnomnom Happy Food

Will I really nom nom nom or will I eiw ugh argh at their food?

The long wait is over, I finally was able to visit Nomnomnom with a good friend.  I have been hearing a lot about this place which serves healthy vegetarian fare. Not quite sure about that since I also heard they do serve fish and chicken but don't serve pork or beef (could that be considered vegetarian? Or just borderline vegetarian? Hahahaha)

It's a little challenging finding the place specially if it is your first time to visit the area. Nomnomnom is tucked inside an old building in the corner of Tomas Morato and E. Rodriguez. It is just right beside the Shell gas station. Good thing I'm quite familiar with the place.

We intend to spend some good quality girl bonding and I thought that this would definitely be a perfect place for that.I was equally anticipating love at first sight and love at first bite both on the place and their food. I know that Nomnomnom is a small homey place and I definitely go for quiet and gemutlich nook specially on occasions when long conversations are expected together with a good meal, just like what my friend and I planned for that afternoon.

We were greeted with smiles by their staff and we instantly fell in love with the place. I particularly love the rustic feel and the mere presence of old books around made me feel comfortable right away.

We were given the menu as soon as we decided our spot to settle in. I have my orders ready even before arriving since I have been researching about Nomnomnom for quite some time.

We initially decided to order their Fried Ravioli however, the server instantly break in the bad news that they don't have it anymore by the time we came in. I went ordering the other option which is the Mozarella Sticks but got the same response. I have read on other reviews that they also experienced the same thing when they visited Nomnomnom. I guess it's an existing concern for the management and it should be addressed so as not to happen again. They always run out of ingredients which diminishes the consistency of their service. We then decided to settle with their Fish and Chips hoping it is something that would suffice the craving for our earlier choices.

Their Malinomnom pizza which they claim as one of their best sellers also made into the list of our orders. I'm a little reluctant to try it since I know that I am not much of a fan of both Tinapa and Kesong Puti but still gave  it a go. We also ordered a pasta dish called Enchilada

Fish and Chips (Php 170)
Big cuts of potatoes and fish fillet coated with Japanese breadcrumbs with garlic sauce. The entire dish is a little bland for my taste and the Garlic sauce tasted a bit off at first. I was trying to search for that certain tangy kick but I only remember tasting something odd. *shrugs shoulders*

Enchillada (Php 200)
This is a Mexican version of a Lasagna made with flour tortilla and filled with kangkong, cream and cheese, topped with enchillada sauce. This is probably the only dish I liked among the orders we had. I love the mixing of the cream and cheese plus the enchilada sauce. The kangkong balances everything by giving a unique texture to the dish.My friend Reign also love this. :)

Malinomnom Pizza Log (Php 310)
Freshly baked dough with Tinapa, Kesong Puti, red egg and shallots. I've got mixed reaction to this.I like it on my first bite but kinda find the flavors overpowering. The tinapa flavor itself is overwhelming and salty and the salted egg made it saltier. The shallots also gave off quite strong flavors. Don't get me wrong, I love the combination of salted egg and kesong puti for I have sampled another local pizza in Lime 88 only in that instance, it was longanisa instead of tinapa that's on top of the pizza and  I loved it. Well I guess tinapa is really not for me.

House Iced Tea - Pitcher (Php 130)
We also got their House Iced Tea but there's nothing special about it. I was anticipating a steeped tea bag iced tea but got an instant commercial iced tea instead.

My friend Reign and I enjoyed the peace and quiet as we eat our meal and enjoyed the catching up conversation. We also took some more shots of the place after our meal.

Someone is indeed positive. :)

Yours truly in a portrait shot :P

Verdict and Recommendations:

Yes I love the feel of the place. Its homey and its quiet, perfect for a lazy weekend afternoon. As for the food, I don't want to assume that they serve mediocre food but as far as our orders are concerned, my palate was not really that satisfied. Overall, I'll give Nomnomnom a 2.5/5 for the consistency of service and the taste of the food.

Among the orders we placed, its only the Enchilada that I would probably recommend. Unless you're a tinapa lover, then the Malinomnom Pizza Log should be in your list.

So did I nom nom nom? At some point I did, though at some parts I also did eiw ugh argh. :P Not closing my doors for Nomnomnom though. As what I said I fell in love with the place and I know its somewhere I wanna hang out with for some "ME" time. I still have to try the rest of the offerings in their menu and for sure I'll be able to choose something that my taste buds would party into to. Wifi is fast too, super ideal for my work from home moments. Hehe.

Brotzeit Philippines : Beer and Sausage Heaven

Beers and sausages? Man, my ultimate weakness! I know that as soon as my friend Michy asked me to try out this newly opened German beer bar in Ortigas that I was in for a treat. I mean come on, what would go wrong if you put beer, sausages and friends together in one table?

The excited me arrived at around 5:00 PM and decided to shop a little at the mall when I realized that my thirst for beer needs to be quenched as soon as possible and that I can't wait till 7:00 PM (the meet up time). I looked for a good spot where I can people watch, smoke and drink my cold beer.

Brotzeit is located at the resto strip of Shangri-la mall facing Edsa Shang hotel. The place is quite spacious and very ideal for small get togethers or a simple quiet dinner with friends. What I love the most about Brotzeit is that they've got superb taste in music! It is so rare that I visit a certain place and fall in love with their playlist.

Apparently, Brotzeit has this Happy Hour before 6:00 PM and you can get the beers in a much lower price.

I decided to get the Paulaner Dunkel Heffe - Weissbier while waiting for the rest of the group to arrive. Will write a separate beer review post for this but all I can say is that this is the best Paulaner beer I've tried that night.

 Paulaner Dunkel Heffe - Weissbier

I've finished that glass in no time. I was quite hesitant to try another one since my worry is that I might be drunk by the time my friends arrive but it was so hot that afternoon that I know I need some beers to tone down the heat. But actually that's only my 'palusot' to get a glass immediately right after I finished the first one. Hehehehe.

For my second glass, I settled for a flavored beer called Affensaft, a Weissbier with your choice of Banana Syrup or Mango Juice. I'm not really a fan of flavored beer but wanted to try out something so that my  non beer drinking readers would somehow have a choice and might consider trying out beers like this. I would say its good. Its refreshing since the Affensaft I chose is with Mango Juice. Worth a try for non beer lovers.

Affensaft - Weissbier with Banana Syrup or Mango Juice (Php 175 for 0.3 L and Php 265 for 0.5 L)
After this glass, a friend arrived and the beers started pouring in! I love it. The beers went very well with the food that we ordered and it was certainly something that I have enjoyed that night.

As soon as the group was somehow completed, we started placing our orders and here's what we got that night.

Wurstelplatte / Sausage Platter (for 2 Pax) Php 980
They have superb sausages. I love all of it except for that white sausage since it is a bit soft compared to the rest of the sausage on that platter. I particularly love the spicy sausages. It comes with a sauerkraut which is a little dry for me. But the sausages are oh so good with mustard. Yum!

Nurnberger / Grilled Pork Sausages  - Php 470
I love the their Pork Sausages. It has good spice and is very tasty. Pairs well with the sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.

Currywurst / Pork Curry Sausage - Php 430
Totally love everything about this dish. I'm a big fan of curry and anything spicy and this one has been a feast for my palate! I love the heat coming from the chili-curry sauce that went perfectly with the sausage. I also love the kick of spice coming from the cracked black pepper that gave so much life to the fries. Its an explosion of spices in every bite!

Kasespatzle / Cheese Spatzle - Php 580

Kasespatzle is basically a German Mac and Cheese. This one has assorted melted cheese and crispy fried onions on top. I loved my first bite of the dish, however, I was unsure if it would taste the same if I had it first before the Currywurst. The Currywurst dish has pretty strong spices and I'm guessing the Kasespatzle  is bland and not that flavorful if eaten as it is. I've realized that the Currywurst and this dish would go perfectly well together then for they compliment each other. (Parang lovelife lang ahhahahaha!)

In between those lovely bites of food we had were more glasses of beers.

Paulaner Original Munchner Lager

Paulaner Original Muncher Dunkel Lager
We didn't leave the table without trying on the desserts. We always have to have room for sweet endings but I wasn't really impressed with these.

Schokokuchen / Chocolate Cake - Php 270

Apfelstrudel / Apple Strudel - Php 280

I was not charmed by any of the desserts. The Apple Strudel is very bland for my taste.

Verdict and Recommendations:

I'll give Brotzeit a 3.5/5. It is an expensive place to dine and some of the dishes were not really tremendously superb. The beer however is something that I truly enjoyed. I love the fact that they serve their beers according to the German Purity Law of 1516 and its 100% natural, made with pure spring water and imported from Germany. Bonggels!

Here's my recommended beers:

Dunkel Heffe Weissbier
Original Muncher Dunkel Lager
Affensaft - for the not so beer lovers :P

For the dishes:

Currywurst - two thumbs up!

Wurstelplatte - they really have good sausages

Skip the desserts. Pretty expensive and not so delish.

Kowloon House All You Can Eat Lunch Buffet

Nostalgia at its finest!

When I was a little kid, when mom and dad still work at the university, both would always come home bringing my sister and I's favorite pasalubong. It is either a box of Dunkin' Donuts Munchkins or the Jumbo Siopao of Kowloon House. My childhood will never be the same without the memories of the soft, sweet white bun and the delectable slice of Chinese chorizo in the middle of the meat filling. It was simply heavenly.

For Papa's 61st birthday, the whole family decided to have lunch at Kowloon House West Avenue. My family and I fancies Chinese food so much (minus the whole Chinese Food syndrome experienced after each Chinese cuisine feast) thus deciding to visit one classic Chinese restaurant to walk down the memory lane for our taste buds.

Kowloon offers lunch and dinner buffet for Php 295 including the unlimited iced tea refills. Let me show you how the buffet spread looks like.

For starters, they have Seaweeds, Century Eggs, Sharksfin and Pork Siomai and their signature Kowloon siopao.

Seaweeds and Century Eggs

Siopao and Siomai

Now the Main Dishes:

Yang Chow Fried Rice and Plain White Rice

Brocolli and Garlic / Taiwan Pechay

KH Special Stirr Fried Noodle / Lohon Vegetables

Steamed Fish Fillet with Bean Curd and Soy Sauce / Fragrant Chicken

Beef Tenderloin with Young Corn / Sweet and Sour Pork
Bacon Shrimp Roll / Pork Tausi Spareribs

Fried Chicken / Lumpiang Shanghai
Pata Tim / Crab Foo Yong

Steamed Pangasius with Light Soy Sauce

Stuffed Beancurd / Noodles for Mami

Condiments and Different Stuff for Mami
The desserts this time!

The classic Buchi

Dont know what they call this one but it resembles the Filipino Sapin - sapin

The buffet spread in my opinion is fantastic! I'm a total sucker for Chinese food and the mere fact that two of my favorites are offered in the buffet (Sweet and Sour Pork and Siopao) made me totally ecstatic. Let me share with you whats in some of my plates.

Plate # 1

A bowl of Yang Chow Fried Rice (I think I went for a second bowl after this) :P

Plate # 2
Now here's the verdict and recommendations :

I would have to give it a 3.5 / 5. It's actually a little biased for I love everything Chinese. The service is good, the staff is attentive to the guests needs, the place, although old is spic and span and the food itself is good.

For the recommended dishes, I would have to give plus points to the following:

Beef Tenderloin with Young Corn
Sweet and Sour Pork
Bacon Shrimp Roll
Pork Tausi Spareribs
Stuffed Beancurd

The rest of the offerings are good but didn't really made me wow.

Overall, my family and I's dining experience at Kowloon House is pleasant. Ma and Pa loved the classic Chinese dishes and my niece and nephews enjoyed and experienced another family favorite. Come on, let's consider the price too. Ain't it cheap at Php 295? You get nostalgia and value for your money all in one instance. Shall I go back to Kowloon House? Definitely will do. :)
